CIT alumni shaping design in the education sector
Published: 13 Dec 2024
When Ben founded Paper Monkey in 2001, he took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. As a fresh CIT graduate with experience working as a graphic designer for the Australian National University, he saw a unique opportunity to use creative design to elevate the education sector. With a clear vision and just the right amount of risk, Paper Monkey was born. Today, it’s a design studio known for dynamic projects that bring education institution brands across Australia to life.
A meeting of minds
Fast forward a few years, and Ben and Liam’s paths crossed in Canberra’s vibrant design community. Although not in the same CIT cohort, they bonded over a mutual educational background and passion for design, which led to a shared vision. Liam joined the Paper Monkey team, becoming integral to the studio and contributing to every stage of the creative process – from brainstorming ideas to delivering polished artwork.
The CIT difference
Ben and Liam say CIT’s hands-on approach prepared them well for the design industry. Ben was drawn to CIT for its practical, immersive creative courses. For Liam, the journey was more challenging. After an initial application setback, CIT supported his pathway to study through a night course to enhance his portfolio and reapply.
In his first year, Liam recalls, “There were no computers in our graphic design course. We learned by hand, mastering traditional art techniques that might seem outdated today but have proven invaluable.”
This foundation has gone on to shape both their careers, grounding their work in a deep understanding of creative development and client needs.
Turning education into real-world impact
“The great thing about the practical nature of CIT is that you graduate with hands-on experience.” Liam shares. By the time he landed his first job, he was ready to hit the ground running. “While I still had plenty to learn from more experienced colleagues, I felt well-prepared for my role thanks to CIT’s practical approach.”
Ben echoes this sentiment, noting how in-demand CIT graduates are. “Even after all these years, we see that employers still value practical experience, often preferring graduates who come equipped with real-world skills.”
Career highlights and full circle moments
Since its founding, Paper Monkey has grown from humble beginnings in Canberra to partnering with clients nationwide, including universities across Australia.
Recently, Paper Monkey had the opportunity to work with CIT on a project – a chance to return to their roots, reminding them of their student days and showcasing just how far they’ve come. “It felt like a full circle moment,” they agreed, reminiscing on their journey.
Advice for aspiring creatives
“Don’t let yourself be defined solely by your degree. You’re not just a graphic designer; you’re a creative force capable of exploring beyond traditional boundaries.” Ben advises.
Liam adds, “During your time as a student, find a niche in design that resonates with you. Building and strengthening your skills around that focus can incredibly benefit your identity as a designer.”
Ben and Liam’s journey from CIT students to creative professionals is a testament to the power of education, creativity and connection, inspiring future graduates to forge their own paths.
