For Jess Clark, a massage therapist with nearly two decades of experience, working with Australia’s Para-athletics team isn’t just a job – it’s a calling. From intense training sessions to the gold-medal moments, Jess plays a vital role in helping athletes achieve their best through recovery, injury rehabilitation and prevention. Alongside her work with elite athletes, she runs a thriving private practice in Canberra, where she and her team help the local community overcome movement challenges and stay active.
A successful career built at CIT
Jess’s journey into massage therapy began at CIT in 2005. The hands-on approach of her studies, combined with a strong emphasis on anatomy and physiology, provided the perfect foundation for her career in manual therapy.
“I was inspired by the incredible support from my educators,” says Jess. “I built strong industry relationships during my time at CIT, and I’ve even returned to sit in and engage with the sports massage cohorts over the years. It’s been a rewarding experience to meet the future therapists entering the industry.”
Career highlights
Jess’s career has been defined by her work with the Australian Paralympic team, including a standout moment at the 2024 Paris Games.
“It was incredible to experience the return of the crowds. The energy was electrifying, and there were so many goosebump moments with the atmosphere created by the cheering crowds,” she recalls.
Behind the scenes, Jess is part of the athletes’ daily grind, helping them recover, prevent injuries and stay ready for competition. She credits her adaptability and problem-solving skills – first developed at CIT – as key to thriving in highpressure environments. “Being practical and thinking on your feet are key skills I picked up early on, and they’ve been essential in my career,” she says.
Reflecting on her proudest achievements, Jess points to her role in supporting the Australian Paralympians in their quest for gold.
“Wearing the green and gold alongside my teammates was a massive highlight,” she says. The experience was even more special because two of her Canberra colleagues also attended the Games. “Sharing that moment with them was something I’ll never forget.”
Looking ahead
As Jess continues mentoring her team and other industry colleagues, she’s already setting her sights on the 2028 LA Games.
“I’m deeply passionate about the work I do, and I hope to inspire others to foster their own passion by developing their skills and improving client outcomes. The LA Games are just around the corner, and I’m excited to be part of that journey with the athletes,” she says.
Advice for aspiring massage therapists

- Never stop learning.
“If you find a particular area or group within the industry that excites you, go after it. Opportunities often arise when you least expect them,” Jess adds.
