Empowering women to power Canberra’s renewable future

The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and Global Power Generation (GPG) are proud to announce the recipients of the inaugural GPG Women in Renewables Scholarships, designed to address critical skills shortages and diversify Canberra’s energy workforce.

Six talented women have been awarded these scholarships, marking a significant step towards building a more sustainable and inclusive future for the ACT.

As Canberra progresses toward ambitious renewable energy targets, these scholarships create a pathway for women to gain qualifications in fields such as air conditioning and refrigeration, project management, and cyber security, skills that are essential to the ACT’s clean energy transformation.

With Australia needing 32,000 electricians and 6,000 air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics by 2030, the scholarships directly support industries vital to achieving national and local energy targets. According to ACT Government modelling, Canberra alone will require an additional 1,290 electricians and 270 electrical engineers by 2045 to meet its net zero emissions goals.

CIT Interim CEO Christine Robertson emphasised the importance of preparing a diverse workforce to lead this transition. 

“CIT is proud to support women in taking up careers in renewable energy, a sector that is not only rapidly growing but essential to the future of our city. These scholarships open doors to rewarding careers while addressing critical skills gaps in the ACT and beyond,” said Ms. Robertson.

Global Power Generation, a leader in renewable energy, has partnered with CIT to provide these scholarships as part of its commitment to creating opportunities for underrepresented groups in the energy sector.

Kirsty Levings, Workplace Health & Safety, Environment, Quality and Compliance Manager, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative.

The GPG Women in Renewables Scholarships are more than just financial support, they represent a commitment to empowering women, building resilience in the workforce, and ensuring Canberra is equipped to meet the challenges of the energy transition.

By providing training, mentorship, and potential work placements, the program connects scholarship recipients to high-demand roles that impact everyday life, from maintaining air conditioning systems to securing energy infrastructure against cyber threats.
