Overview

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to safely operate a personnel and materials hoist including cantilever or tower hoist or several winches configured to operate as a hoist intended to carry goods, materials, or people. This training includes valuable hands-on practical skills at CIT's purpose built high risk work facility.

On successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for a high risk work licence with the regulatory body, Access Canberra, (within 60 days from the issue date of the Statement of Attainment).

Duration:

16 hours: If daytime course - 2 x 8 hr days, if evening course run over 4 nights (4 hours per night)

You must also complete additional time in the workplace, or at CIT, undertaking various tasks related to operating a personnel and materials hoist work. This time will vary depending on the experiences of the individual learner.

Additional Information

During training and assessment, you must wear suitable clothing and footwear (steel capped boots), for working on a construction site.

On enrolment, you will be issued with a CIT logbook for the purpose of recording training received on a work site and formal skills training at CIT. You will be required to submit your completed logbook before undertaking the Safe Work accredited National assessment for Licence to Operate a Personnel and Materials Hoist.

Entry Requirements

To enter this course, you must:
- Be physically fit and able to work at heights
- Be at least 18 years of age - this is a requirement in the ACT for licencing of Persons Performing High Risk Work
- Have access to an appropriate workplace with required equipment
- Have the English language skills to effectively communicate and work safely with others in the work area and to read and comprehend manufacturer's instructions and workplace procedures and safety signs. You must also be able to apply mathematical procedures for the estimation and measurement of loads.

These skills will be checked prior to enrolment.

To study any course at CIT (excluding degrees and non-accredited training) you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Literacy Skills Information

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework literacy levels of at least 3 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course.       Description: This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a personnel and materials hoist, that is, a cantilever or tower hoist or several winches configured to operate as a hoist intended to carry goods, materials or people.Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.Competence in this unit does not in itself result in a licence. A licence is obtained after competence is assessed under applicable Commonwealth, state or territory work health and safety (WHS) regulations.
