A new path ignites
Initially pursuing a career in health, Rachel found herself unsatisfied by her mid-twenties and decided to explore other options. Her turning point came during her work experience with an electrical company. From the very start, she was captivated by the electricians' work environment—the physicality of the job, the technical aspects and the camaraderie among electricians sparked a newfound passion in her. This experience set her on the path to becoming an electrotechnology electrician.
Rachel recognised the significant advantages of acquiring a broad skill set in electrical work. From controls and commercial work to domestic and renewable energies, the versatility of electrotechnology offered exciting possibilities. Rachel particularly enjoys working in the domestic area of the industry including a focus on renewable energy work, where she saw both the immediate and long-term benefits of advancing in renewable technologies. Understanding the increasing demand for skilled tradespeople in renewable energy, she pursued a career in the electrical industry that included a hands-on education at CIT, building a solid foundation for her career.
Gaining future-ready skills at CIT
Deciding to embark on a new career, Rachel enrolled at CIT to equip herself with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in electrotechnology.
“I love CIT! I look forward to CIT days because our teachers are passionate and the students are amazing. It’s a collaborative environment where we all share ideas and learn from each other” Rachel shares.
CIT’s practical approach to training, including hands-on experience with basic tasks like installing power points and understanding safety protocols, has prepared Rachel well for real-world scenarios.
The impact of the Brighte Pathways: Women in Sustainable Energy Scholarship
Receiving the scholarship has been a game-changer for Rachel. Beyond the financial support, it has enabled her to purchase tools for further learning and experimentation outside of work.
“The scholarship has made a significant difference,” Rachel says
“It’s not just about the money; it’s encouraging to be recognised and supported as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. Feeling celebrated for reaching a milestone in my career is incredibly important.”
Rachel appreciates how the Brighte Scholarship not only supports women in trades but also fosters a supportive network.
“The visibility and encouragement for women in non-traditional roles are crucial. It’s inspiring to see other women succeeding and to be part of a community that supports each other,” she says.
This network has provided Rachel with invaluable support and encouragement throughout her journey.
Advancing sustainability in the electrical industry
Rachel has a deep passion for how electrotechnology contributes to building a sustainable future. With Australia's growing emphasis on renewable energy sources such as EV chargers, solar panels, and wind turbines, she is enthusiastic about the industry's progress. Rachel underscores the importance of integrating environmental practices and innovative solutions within the electrical sector. This includes adopting energy-efficient measures like switching from halogen to LED lighting to minimise power consumption. By focusing on these practices, Rachel and her industry peers are committed to supporting Australia's transition towards net-zero. Implementing renewable energy solutions is a crucial step in this direction, paving the way for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future.
Advice for women wanting to enter the field
Rachel’s advice to newcomers in the field is both practical and encouraging. She emphasises the importance of starting from scratch, acknowledging that it’s normal to be new to tools or concepts of electricity.
“It’s okay if you’re starting out and feeling overwhelmed,” she says.
“The people you work with will likely have years of experience, and they know the ins and outs of the trade. Listen and learn from the experienced tradespeople around you—they have the knowledge and skills you need. Electricity can be dangerous, so it’s crucial to let them guide you and be patient with yourself. The process might be challenging at first, but mastering these skills will be incredibly rewarding in the end.”
Future aspirations
Rachel’s ultimate goal is to excel as an electrician, and she feels she is on the right path.
“CIT has been instrumental in helping me develop my skills and prepare for the job site,” she notes.
The practical experience and background knowledge she’s gaining are essential for navigating the complexities of real-world electrical work. Rachel is confident that with continued support and education, she will achieve her dream job, tackle the real-world challenges of the trade and contribute meaningfully to the field.
