CIT alumnus pours passion into a purpose-driven business
Published: 30 Jun 2025
With a strong foundation in corporate property but a burning passion for food and wine, CIT alumnus Ben was searching for something more hands-on and fulfilling. Studying at CIT became more than just an academic step, it was the turning point that helped him transform a long-time passion into a bold new business venture. That business venture became Contentious Character, launched in 2016, a bold, playful and conversational approach to wine that’s helped reshape Canberra’s traditional wine scene.
A course that changed everything
Eager to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, Ben chose to study business at CIT. The practical hands-on learning style and flexible study options made it the right fit.
“I’ve always learned best by doing,” Ben says. “CIT’s approach really clicked with me. It wasn’t just about theory, it was about learning how to actually apply that knowledge in a business setting.”
Ben completed a business qualification that equipped him with practical tools, from branding to operations, and gave him the foundation to launch his own business.
“It was incredibly valuable to get that technical understanding. It helped me think critically, make better decisions and ultimately gave me the foundation to start Contentious Character.”
During his time at CIT, Ben also built a network of industry connections that would go on to support his move to the wine and hospitality world.
Shaking up the Canberra wine scene
Ben saw untapped potential in Canberra’s wine region, a region he describes as “quite underrated.” With experience in sales and marketing from the property sector, he brought a fresh perspective.
“Most wineries in Canberra are family-run and deeply rooted in tradition. I came in wanting to shake things up,” Ben says.
He launched Contentious Character with a focus on creating a dynamic, engaging experience, one centred around storytelling, events and building community through food and wine.
Bringing the brand to life
One of Ben’s proudest moments came when he transformed the existing Lambert Vineyard in Wamboin into what is now known as Contentious Character. Rebranding the business was a pivotal milestone.
“Seeing the brand come to life on shelves, in people’s hands, being enjoyed across Australia, was surreal,” Ben reflects. “That journey from idea to reality was the moment I knew all risk had been worth it.”
The highs, lows and staying motivated
Like many entrepreneurs, Ben has faced his challenges, from natural disasters like bushfires to the uncertainties of COVID-19. But the highs have just been as powerful.
“Business is a risky game and a lot of hard work,” he admits. “But it’s also incredibly rewarding. One of the best parts is building genuine connections both with our team and with customers who engage with the story behind our wine. It’s what keeps me going”
Another proud achievement was launching the Urban Winery concept and bringing winemaking into the city and creating new ways to connect with customers.
Stay curious and take the leap
Ben encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to embrace learning and stay curious.
“Get that business qualification. It’s crucial for understanding the levers you’ll need to pull,” he advises. “But don’t wait for everything to be perfect, start before you’re ready.”
His final piece of advice? “Surround yourself with people who challenge you and push your thinking. That’s what leads to growth and remember failure is just another part of learning. Take the risk, you never know where it’ll take you.”
