15 students from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) have touched down in Brisbane and will shortly represent the ACT and region at the 2025 WorldSkills national championships. The Worldskills Australia competition is being held 12–14 June 2025. National champions will go on to represent Australia at the global WorldSkills finals, being held February 2026 in Shanghai China.

CIT students, covering 14 trade categories, earned their place at the biennial competition through regional qualifying events. Also representing the ACT is a NECA student for electrical installation. All ACT finalists came through regional finals hosted by CIT in 2024.
WorldSkills is one of the largest skills competitions in the southern hemisphere, is deeply respected and supported by industry and education leaders and offers a unique opportunity for students to challenge themselves against the best. Each state has sent teams of its most talented vocational education and training (VET) students.

CIT Interim CEO, Christine Robertson, said CIT was proud to support students in showcasing their skills on a national platform.

“CIT is incredibly proud of the students representing the ACT at this year’s WorldSkills National Championships. Their selection is a reflection of their dedication, resilience, and the high standard of training delivered at CIT every day.

“These students are not just competing, they are preparing to become leaders in their industries. WorldSkills offers them an invaluable opportunity to apply their skills in highpressure environments that mirror the expectations of real-world workplaces.” said Ms Robertson.

CIT students said their preparation for WorldSkills had already been a transformative experience, supported by the expert mentoring of their teachers and practical hands-on training.

William, competing in the patisserie category, says his journey has been shaped by his time at CIT, where he found invaluable support and inspiration from his teachers.

“Chef Dammika is incredible, he’s so kind and caring and willing to share his skills and knowledge with all young inspiring pastry chef.
“That’s what makes CIT such a great institution. The teachers don’t just pass on skills, they guide you to become your best self.” William said.

Brianee, competing in Floristry, sees WorldSkills as an opportunity to boost her confidence and fine-tune her techniques.

“I’m excited to have a clear plan and give it my best shot. This experience will help me improve my timing, work faster and become more versatile in my designs, from hand-tied bouquets to base medium and display arrangements.” Brianee said.

CIT’s strong representation at the national event is testament to the talent and dedication of its students and the expertise of its training teams.

More than 10,000 spectators, including school students considering careers in trades and technical areas, are expected to attend the Brisbane event over three days.
