Ben's journey from apprentice to award-winning builder

Published: 10 Feb 2025

Inspired by family and a lifelong passion

Ben’s journey into carpentry was shaped by a deep passion for the trade, instilled in him by his father, a carpenter and tiler by trade. Encouraged to pursue a career in construction, Ben followed his father’s footsteps. He began his apprenticeship at CIT, eager to gain the skills and technical knowledge necessary to succeed. Now, entering his fourth year as an apprentice for his Certificate III in Carpentry, Ben is working towards his Diploma of Building and Construction.

A strong partnership with CIT

Ben’s employer, Hardwick Projects, has long trusted CIT for its apprenticeship programs.

“We’ve always had great experiences with CIT and that’s why we continue to recommend CIT to our apprentices,” says Sean Hardwick, Director/Owner of Hardwick Projects.

CIT’s combination of classroom learning and hands-on training has equipped Ben with the essential skills needed for his role.

“The instructors at CIT taught me valuable skills that I could immediately apply on-site,” Ben shares.

The value of apprenticeships to the industry

For Sean, apprenticeships aren’t just about filling a role – they’re about nurturing the next generation of skilled trades and securing the future of the construction industry.

“Encouraging younger generations to pursue careers in trade-based industries is vital. Apprenticeships provide the skills and experience needed to sustain and grow our sector,” Sean explains.

Hardwick Projects views supporting apprentices as central to its success.

“Supporting apprentices has always been an important aspect of Hardwick Projects’ growth. Our company wouldn’t be the same without the incredible contributions apprentices bring,” Sean adds.

He takes pride in fostering their development and helping shape their careers.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow and succeed,” he says.

The courses CIT offers are a balance of theory and practical experience, giving apprentices like Ben the opportunity to hone their skills and build a solid foundation for their careers.

“The real-world application is essential, and CIT’s training ensures that apprentices are well-prepared for the challenges they’ll face on the job.”

Gaining experience as a site manager

One of the most significant milestones in Ben’s apprenticeship was learning how to be a site manager for a large new building project.

“Ben came to us with a clear goal of becoming a builder, not just a carpenter and we’ve watched him grow into that role,” says Sean.

Under Sean’s watchful eye, Ben was given the opportunity to manage day-to-day operations on site, putting his leadership and problem-solving skills to the test.

“Being a site manager is an incredible experience and I’m proud of how the project is progressing,” Ben reflects.

Recognition for hard work and dedication

As a result of his commitment and progress, Ben was nominated for the prestigious Housing Industry Association (HIA) Apprentice of the Year award.

“It was clear from Ben’s second year that he had the initiative to succeed,” says Sean.

His ability to take on more responsibility and show continuous improvement set him apart.

Ben was awarded the 2024 HIA CSR ACT/Southern NSW Housing, Kitchen and Bathroom Award.

“Winning this award gives me a lot of confidence and motivates me to keep pushing forward. It means a lot to me, I definitely worked hard for it, and it didn’t come easily, but it means a lot,” Ben says, highlighting the value of recognition in his career development.

Advice for future apprentices

Ben encourages others to pursue apprenticeships, particularly given the current demand for skilled workers in the construction industry.

“CIT offers great opportunities for learning and growth and it’s a great place to build connections,” he says.

Sean echoes Ben’s sentiment, emphasising the industry’s need for skilled apprentices, noting that the shortage of skilled workers presents an exciting opportunity for those entering the field.

Building a bright future in construction
Ben’s apprenticeship at CIT has set him on the path to becoming a successful builder. With a solid foundation of technical and leadership skills, that’s already earning him industry recognition for his work, Ben is well on his way to making a lasting impact in the construction industry. His journey is a testament to the value of apprenticeships and the importance of hands-on training in shaping the next generation of skilled professional.
