The creative journey of CIT photography students
Published: 13 May 2025
Photography is more than capturing moments in time, it’s about understanding light, composition and the technical skills behind each shot. At CIT, students dive deep into the complexities of digital imaging and photography, gaining practical skills and exploring their creativity. Two students, Jordan and Jolie, are on unique paths within the photography world and are learning to refine their skills to complete a Certificate IV in Photography and Digital Imaging.
A journey of discovery and passion
Both Jordan and Jolie’s love for photography began at a young age.
Jordan’s interest sparked when he was 13, influenced by a family friend who brought a camera to family events. Over time, his passion grew – he began photographing his school’s rugby team and experimenting more with different styles. “I found my groove in shooting sport and kept working on my skills to work my way up,” Jordan says.
Jolie on the other hand, has been taking photos since childhood and wanted to expand her technical abilities. “I wanted to study photography to learn more of the technical skills and techniques,” Jolie shares. Through the course, she’s also discovered a more creative side of herself.
Both students decided to pursue formal study to strengthen their skills and broaden their horizons. Jordan realised in Year 11 that photography could be more than a hobby – it could be a career. Jolie, who already runs a commercial photography business, saw the value in backing up her experience with a formal qualification. “I wanted to learn the skills behind photography to help me with my business,” Jolie says.
Mastering the art of photography
A standout feature of course is the diversity of skills students develop. From studio lighting to image enhancement, they’re exposed to various techniques that help build a versatile skill set. Jordan especially appreciates the variety the course offers. “At CIT, we get to do everything from studio to product photography to video work. It’s an opportunity to try everything.”
Jolie, who focuses on animal and equestrian photography, found aspects of the course challenging, particularly when branching into unfamiliar areas like street and landscape photography. “The teachers have been so helpful in guiding me through these new areas and building my skills,” Jolie reflects.
Both students have also benefited from collaborative learning. In a recent team project, they created camera obscura’s, simple devices that demonstrate the principles of how a camera works. The students used them to capture images, blending traditional techniques with modern processing methods.
“The exhibition was a result of three months of teamwork and collaboration,” Jordan explains.
“It’s not just about the images but about the effort we put in as a group.” Jolie adds, “The process of working together as a class has been rewarding. We’ve all contributed from taking photos and creating posters to ensuring everything was up to date.”
The camera obscura exhibition
The collaborative exhibition gave students a unique opportunity to experiment with photography in a historical context. Camera obscura, a concept dating back to 400 BCE, became the foundation for their work. Using cardboard boxes, tracing paper and magnifying glasses, students created images using the same principles early photographers relied on.
Both Jordan and Jolie have found the project to be a fun and educational challenge. “It’s been a cool experience to see how photography began and how we can still use these methods today,” says Jolie. “It’s also satisfying to see the final prints. They look much different in person than on a screen,” she adds.
For Jordan, the project offered a meaningful connection with the roots of photography while helping him build his technical skills in a creative and hands-on way.
Building confidence and creativity for the future
While Jordan and Jolie have taken different paths, both say the skills they’ve gained at CIT are invaluable for their future.
Jordan plans to continue in the photography industry, focusing on sports photography. Jolie aims to grow her commercial photography business with new skills and a deeper understanding of the craft.
“You have to love it and be willing to try new things,” says Jordan.
Jolie agrees, adding, “Just give it a go, even if you’ve been self-taught. Learning the techniques properly will help you create the best images possible.”
A path forward
For Jordan and Jolie, their photography journeys are just beginning. With a strong foundation built at CIT, both are ready to take on new creative challenges, armed with greater confidence, practical experience and a deeper passion for photography.
Photography is more than just capturing an image, it’s about capturing the essence of a moment, the collaboration behind a project and the creativity that drives innovation. Jordan and Jolie have discovered this firsthand and their stories prove the power of learning and growing in a dynamic and ever-evolving field.
