CIT alumna finds purpose in cyber security career change
Published: 14 Jul 2025
Coming from a background in business, administration and finance, Dibya had the foundational skills to understand compliance and data. As the digital landscape evolved and cyber risks increased, she felt drawn to make a career change into cyber security. Now working as an Assistant Cybersecurity Advisor, her role focuses on advisory work, educating others and raising awareness about cyber threats.
Inspired by real-world events
During COVID-19, when cyber-attacks surged, Dibya saw firsthand the critical importance of cyber security, especially as incidents targeted health systems and compromised personal data privacy. This period revealed how vulnerable systems can be.
“As someone who values community support, I felt compelled to contribute. Even in a small way, I wanted to help safeguard people and organisations. That sense of purpose shaped my decision to enter cybersecurity,” Dibya says.
Returning to CIT to upskill
Having previously studied accounting at CIT, Dibya was already familiar with how closely CIT’s courses align with industry needs. Returning to complete a Certificate IV in cyber security felt like a natural step.
“CIT has a very hands-on practical approach to learning. The teachers are skilled and provide strong mentorship and support. The course is designed to be industry-relevant and transformative, which really appealed to me,” she says.
“My experience at CIT was very empowering and transformative. The teachers were very supportive and motivating. Coming from a business and finance background, I found their encouragement essential, especially as a mid-career change. It helped turn my curiosity into a passion and made my transition into cybersecurity much smoother.”
Building practical skills that translate to industry
While studying at CIT, Dibya gained hands-on experience in key areas like penetration testing, network hardening and risk assessment. This practical training gave her the confidence and capability to step into her role as a Governance, Risk and Compliance consultant.
“The practical training really made a difference,” she says.
Dibya has continued to prioritise upskilling. After completing her Certificate IV, she pursued an ISO 27001 Certification and returned to CIT for Essential Eight training to further sharpen her skill set.
Recognised as a cybersecurity champion
A highlight of Dibya’s career so far has been her recent nomination as a Cyber Security Champion at the 2025 Australian Women in Security Awards. She also mentors others who are exploring cyber security, particularly those making a career shift.
“People often reach out for advice on entering or growing in the industry, knowing that I’m inspiring and helping others is deeply satisfying,” she says.
Balancing career, study and family life
Dibya admits one of the biggest challenges during her career change was staying motivated and managing time, particularly while balancing family responsibilities.
“The cybersecurity industry is very welcoming. One of its strengths is that it values diversity in experience and thought. While the transition wasn’t easy, staying curious, upskilling regularly and staying connected with the community helped me move forward,” she adds.
Advice for career changers entering cybersecurity
For anyone considering entering a career in cyber security, Dibya emphasises curiosity and persistence.
“Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek help. Engage with the community, attend events and stay involved. Importantly, bring your background with you. The industry values diverse experiences and that makes it a very inclusive and dynamic field to work in,” she says.
Dibya’s story proves that with the right mindset and support, any background can become an asset in a cyber security career.
