Emma Gowling - Business Admin

I recently completed the Diploma of Business Administration at CIT. I had previously completed the Certificate III and Certificate IV in Business Administration and wanted to further expand my skill set.

After I finished grade 12, I decided to take a gap year and I worked in retail. Ultimately I wanted to work in business administration in the public service, but looking at job vacancies, I realised I needed to get a qualification to get the roles I wanted.

I decided to study business administration at CIT as I saw it as the best option for getting into the area I wanted to. Completing my qualifications has meant I’ve developed the relevant skillsets so that I’m at a place where I’m much more employable.

I am very encouraging to others who are thinking about pursuing study at CIT. I believe it gives you exactly the types of skills you'll need out in the workforce. And you receive so much support during your study. I initially went along to the enrolment session and got speaking to a teacher who helped me enrol, answered all my questions and was very reassuring. I found this level of support continued all throughout the rest of my study, and really helped me succeed.

One of the most valuable parts of my study was undertaking work experience at the ACT Legislative Assembly. The work placement formed part of the study for my diploma, and was arranged through CIT.

While the theory that you learn in the classroom has its benefits, and forms the integral basis of what you learn, I found being able to put that theory into practice during my work placement extremely valuable. The experience defined for me what skills were needed out in the workforce, and I found what I had learnt in the classroom integrated well. Being out in the office environment really increased my confidence, and it reassured me that the study I have undertaken is very valuable.

After my work experience, I was offered a role and I now work part-time at the ACT Legislative Assembly. The role is definitely a step in the right direction of where I want to be.
