Overview

You will learn the skills and knowledge to work in the building and construction industry with particular focus on low rise buildings and light steel structures. The course includes learning about the BCA, codes and standards, estimating and site supervision.
Throughout your studies you will be exposed to a wide range of building sites and structures currently under construction in the ACT, engage with key industry employers, visit building projects and liaise with a range of project managers and stakeholders across a broad range of ventures.
This qualification is required to meet the ACT Class C builder's license.

Classes run 4 days per week (Monday - Thursday evenings) for 3-4 hours per class.

Additional Information

It is recommended you have a laptop computer, or personal device and appropriate clothing for worksites including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for commercial worksite visits - hard hat, high visibility shirt/vest and steel cap boots.
Although not mandatory, it is recommended that to go onto worksites you have undertaken training in:

  • White Card (CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry),
  • Asbestos Awareness (11084NAT - Statement of Attainment in Asbestos Awareness) and
  • Silica Prevention (10830NAT - Statement of Attainment -Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention) - as per WorkSafe ACT requirements

Entry Requirements

To ensure your success in this program it is required that you have access to a construction workplace to provide experience from which you will consolidate your learning.

Skills Recognition

To study any course at CIT (excluding degrees and non-accredited training) you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Literacy Skills Information

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework literacy levels of at least 3 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course. If you do not have this level, you can still enrol and seek support to improve your skills or you may prefer to begin with the lower level course. Please visit Foundation Skills.
