Overview
English as Additional Language (EAL)
The Certificate I in EAL (Access)
is a great starting point for learners who are beginning their English language journey. This course focuses on building essential English skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, specifically for personal and everyday social needs. It also helps you develop basic settlement, social, and numeracy skills to support life in your community.
As part of the course, you'll become familiar with the features and structure of short and simple spoken and written texts, such as messages, notes, and basic conversations. You’ll learn how to write simple sentences and fill out basic forms using clear writing conventions. You’ll also practise using straightforward grammar and vocabulary to help you communicate more effectively in daily situations.
By the end of the course, you’ll feel more comfortable using English in familiar settings and will be ready to take the next step into further English language study, vocational training with language support, or entry-level employment pathways.
This qualification involves between 382 and 500 nominal hours, depending on your learning needs.
This course may be available Fee-Free.

If you do not have this level, you can still enrol and seek support to improve your skills or you may prefer to begin with a lower level course, or enrol in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) to develop your literacy skills. Please visit CIT Foundation Skills page.
Transition Information
Qualifications at CIT are regularly updated or replaced to meet current industry needs and maximise your employment opportunities. If this occurs while you are part way through a qualification, you may need to vary your learning to meet the new national requirements. CIT will aim to make this as smooth as possible for you.
