Overview

This course is designed to help Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ACT obtain their learner licence and become safe and competent drivers.

On successful completion, learners will have the knowledge and skills required to understand Australian road rules, safe driving behaviours, and the responsibilities associated with motor vehicle ownership.

Learners will complete the ACT Pre Learner Licence Course and undertake the Road Rules Knowledge Test as part of this program. Successful completion of these components enables learners to meet the requirements to apply for an ACT learner driver licence.

Duration:

CIT will deliver this program of training over a period of 2 days, with up to 10 hours of study, 2 hours for assessment, including face-to-face training.

Learning for the unit VU22410 occurs concurrently with the pre-learner licence training modules.

Group discussions and activities and completing the course workbook supplement the learning over the course.

2 hours is allocated for completing assessment tasks over the 2 days of the course, including the research task, the knowledge quiz and the mandatory pre-learner license safe plates quiz. Additional time may be provided to complete assessment tasks if required.

Additional Information

Successful participants will have to pay a fee of $63.30 to Access Canberra to be supplied with their ACT Learner's Permit and provide 3 forms of identification. Students can seek assistance from the Aboriginal Legal Service to assist with the cost of their learner's permit.

The minimum age to apply for your Learner Licence is 15 years and 9 months. Successful results are valid for 12 months should you not be 15 years and 9 months at the time of the course.

Entry Requirements

To study this course at CIT, you must have a minimum age of 15 and 9 months.

To obtain an ACT Learner Driver Licence, you must:

  • be at least 15 years and 9 months of age
  • complete the Pre-Learner Licence Course and pass the Road Rules Knowledge Test.

Skills Recognition

To study any course at CIT (excluding non-accredited training) you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Literacy Skills Information

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework levels of at least 2 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course. If you do not have this level, you can still enrol and seek support to improve your skills or you may prefer to begin with a lower level course, or enrol in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) to develop your literacy skills.
