Overview

This program is designed for those who are interested in horticulture and learning to identify plants, land and ecosystem regeneration, and creating cultural awareness on native flora and fauna.
The qualification will cover a range of skills and knowledge including:

  • Water sampling and testing
  • Revegetation works
  • Operation of specialised machinery and equipment
  • Erosion and weed control
  • Plant and Fauna recognition in the field
  • Indigenous cultural understanding
  • Interpreting topographical maps and recognising landform
Classes are delivered in the purpose built 4 1/2 hectare horticulture facility at Bruce and will encompass offsite excursions and field work. This will suit you if you enjoy working outdoors and are passionate about our environment, you should have an aptitude for practical work and open to learning on Australian Indigenous culture.

There are two (2) options of delivery available for the student:
  • 2 semesters part time, which includes two (2) days per week and approximately 8 hours per day.
  • 4 semesters part time, which will include one (1) day a week, approximately 8 hours per day.

Additional Information

The course will include classes at CIT and practical activities in the field. Attending practical classes will provide the best opportunity for success in this course.
Whilst completing practical skills you are required to provide and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when outdoors. These include:

  • Footwear and clothing
  • Protective boot coverings
  • Sunhat and sunscreen
  • Gloves for handling materials and dangerous goods

Literacy Skills Information

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework literacy levels of at least 3 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course. They may work at many different levels, as cultural knowledge has no direct relationship with organisational levels of responsibility.The local Australian Indigenous cultural knowledge necessary to achieve competency in this unit may only be accessible to those individuals who identify as elders or who are authorised by local elders on behalf of their communities.
