How Fernando found a new future studying at CIT Canberra
Published: 22 Jan 2026

Fernando is an international student at CIT, currently studying Information Technology at the new Woden campus. When Fernando first arrived in Canberra, he was unsure what to expect from a new city and a new study pathway, a familiar experience for many international students. But when he visited the CIT Woden campus for the first time, he immediately felt welcome.
“The reception team were so warm and easy to talk to. It made me feel like I belonged,” he says. This first experience helped him settle into Canberra and start his studies with confidence.
A peaceful place to grow
Canberra has become a place where Fernando feels motivated and supported. He describes the city as peaceful and a good environment for focusing on study and personal goals.
“I see people running or cycling and it inspires me to do the same. It makes me want to take better care of myself and study harder. It’s a great city to grow.” he says. For him, Canberra offers the right balance of calm, community and encouragement.
Choosing Canberra was also a personal decision for Fernando. His dad’s family has lived in Canberra for more than 40 years and that connection made this transition easier.
“I have a home here, and I feel the love the city gives international students,” he says.

Feeling supported at CIT
Fernando says the support he receives at CIT has been a major part of his positive experience. His teachers and advisors have helped him understand course content, navigate challenges and stay motivated.
“My teachers guide me through any problem. They are always there to help,” he explains. When he needs support outside class, he also uses the CIT International phone line. “Whenever I am unsure about a process or a form, I call and they walk me through it.”
Learning through real experiences
Studying at CIT’s new Woden campus has been another highlight. Fernando describes the campus as modern, welcoming and a place where he feels motivated to learn. He also values the practical learning built into his course.
“The real job scenarios in class help me understand how to apply what I learn to real life situations.”
Although he is early in his course, he has already met businesses and organisations and is hoping to take on industry opportunities next year.

Advice for international students starting their future in Australia
Looking ahead, Fernando wants to complete his course, find a job he enjoys and build a happy life in Australia. His advice to anyone thinking about studying at CIT is simple and encouraging. “Give it your best. Talk to your teachers and advisors. Everyone here is lovely and you will do great.”
Fernando’s journey shows how the right environment, support and practical learning can help you find your place and follow new opportunities with confidence.
