Overview

This course will provide the skills and knowledge to recognise workplace health and safety risks and hazards appropriate, when working with crystalline silica containing products. You will be able to identify products containing crystalline silica, use products in accordance with legislation, and National standards, and identify the consequences of use and/or exposure to silica dust.

This course is delivered on campus, in class with an allocated trainer. Class duration is for four (4) hours only.
You will be required to participate and complete in the course during the face-to-face delivery.

Entry Requirements

All participants require a basic level of language, literacy and numeracy skills in order to be able to read documents relating to the proper fitting of machinery attachments and personal protective equipment (PPE) and the identification of common silica containing materials from specification information.

Skills Recognition

To study any course at CIT (excluding degrees and non-accredited training) you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Literacy Skills Information

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework levels of at least 2 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course. If you do not have this level, you can still enrol and seek support to improve your skills or you may prefer to begin with a lower level course, or enrol in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) to develop your literacy skills.       Description: This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to recognise and mitigate the workplace health and safety risks and hazards of working with crystalline silica containing products. It requires the ability to source and interpret information to assess the level of risk involved in a cutting, drilling or abrading task and to determine a safe system of work for the prevention of exposure to crystalline silica dust. The unit applies to workers in the building and construction, mining and jewellery making/manufacturing industries or anyone intending to use materials that generate crystalline silica dust. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
