Entry Requirements

Entrants into the course 11348NAT Working Safely with Asbestos Containing Materials, applicants must hold:

  • NAT11084001 Identify and report asbestos containing materials (or its successors), OR
  • completed NAT11004001 Identify asbestos containing materials and follow Safety and reporting procedures (or its successors), OR
  • completed a course of training approved for entry by the course development steering committee
And must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Hold a trade-level qualification in construction or allied industry
  • Be employed in an ancillary industry occupation where drilling or penetrating asbestos-containing materials (ACM) is incidental to their occupation, OR
  • Be currently undertaking an apprenticeship in construction or allied trade

      Description: This unit specifies the essential outcomes for safely and effectively drilling, penetrating/cutting and fixing to asbestos containing material (ACM), and the performance criteria by which competency is to be assessed. A person competent in this unit will be able to identify asbestos containing building materials and implement the necessary control measures before performing work that may involve activity that will potentially liberate asbestos fibres from their bonding material. This can typically occur when working with (drilling into, fixing to and penetrating) existing asbestos cement sheeting (AC sheet) or other asbestos containing material in and around residential dwellings, commercial premises and industrial facilities. The unit applies to workers in the Electrotechnology, Gas, Water and Construction industries as well as ancillary occupations. This course meets the requirements for training in working with asbestos in the Work Health and Safety Act and Work Health and Safety Regulations for all Australian state and territories.
