CIT's innovation and excellence recognised at 2019 ACT Training Awards

The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), its teachers and students were recognised for their commitment to innovation and outstanding achievement at the 2019 ACT Training Awards ceremony on 12 September.

Acting Chief Executive Andrew Whale said, "At CIT, we have a great diverse team with industry experience and a dedicated focus on our students and their needs."

Ken Wilson, CIT's High Risk Programs Teacher, was recognised with the ACT VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award in recognition of his leadership developing innovative learning resources to prepare students for the renewables industry.

CIT's students received awards in the following categories:

  • Amelia Gulliford, Certificate III in Business Administration - ACT Trainee of the Year
  • James White, Certificate III in Carpentry - ACT Apprentice of the Year
  • Taylor Williams, Diploma of Government - ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year

"Our winners are building their careers with vocational education and training and will be exemplary advocates for training in Australia. We are proud of their success," Mr Whale said.

The Cyber Security Skills Collaboration, an initiative to develop the cyber security workforce of the future through a collaboration between CIT, Fifth Domain and AustCyber received the 2019 Industry Collaboration Award.

"The collaboration has demonstrated that by working together public and private organisations can harness their unique capabilities to benefit the ACT region and the security of Australia." Mr Whale said.

CIT Facilities Manager Ivan Radic received the 2019 Norm Fisher Award in recognition of his outstanding and extensive contribution to Vocational Education and Training in the ACT. This Award is named in honour of a former CIT Chief Executive and Director who led the Institute from 1987 to 1996 and was a recipient of the Australian Medal.

"We are very proud of Ivan, he has been an important part of the CIT family for over 40 years. His dedication and expertise has ensured CIT's complex fit-for-purpose teaching spaces, office buildings and libraries are operational, innovative and safe," Mr Whale said.

CIT also received the Large Training Provider of the Year Award. Mr Whale acknowledged the importance of the award as recognition of CIT as the premier vocational training institution in Canberra.

"Throughout our 90-year history providing Vocational Education and Training our methods have evolved to equip work ready graduates. I would like to acknowledge our partnerships with industry and government because their support to CIT has been critical in our delivery of quality education and training to meet the skills needs of the future." Mr Whale said.
