AFTRS and CIT partner to strengthen pathways into screen industries

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) have joined forces to create a new pathway for aspiring screen professionals in the ACT and surrounding regions.

Graduates of CIT’s Diploma of Screen and Media will now be eligible to apply for direct entry into Year 2 of AFTRS’ Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, with successful applicants receiving advanced standing for their prior learning. The first intake under this new arrangement will commence in Term 1, 2026.

This collaboration reflects AFTRS’ Creating the Future strategy and a shared commitment to expanding access to industry-focused education and training. One quarter of AFTRS students already come from Vocational Education and Training, but by recognising the enduring skills and impactful hands-on technical training developed at CIT, the pathway provides the opportunity for a streamlined transition into higher education and ultimately into the screen and broadcast industries.

AFTRS’ Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production was developed specifically in response to the needs of employers across the sector, training graduates who are multi-faceted, adaptable and job ready, skilled to work across a variety of entry-level roles and platforms.

CIT’s Diploma of Screen and Media equips students with practical skills in screen and media production and is delivered at CIT’s state-of-the-art Woden campus. The new pathway will offer successful applicants enhanced opportunities to further their studies, enhance their skills and get their start in the screen industry.

Mathieu Ravier, Director of Partnerships and Development at AFTRS, said the partnership follows a successful pathway agreement with TAFE NSW over the past two years, and further expands the school’s national reach.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with CIT to open up new opportunities for talented students in and around the ACT,” Mathieu said.

“This pathway reflects our commitment to nurturing talent across Australia and building inclusive, accessible routes into the screen industries for the next generation of creative professionals.”

Mark Webber, Head of Department, Graphics, Entertainment, Music and Media at CIT, said the partnership builds on the strength of CIT’s creative programs and the commitment of staff who bring industry expertise into the classroom.

“We’re proud to see our Diploma of Screen and Media recognised through this new pathway with AFTRS. Our students learn in professional studios and production environments, working on projects that mirror the realities of the screen and broadcast industries,” Mark said.

“This partnership gives them the chance to take that experience further, opening the door to higher study and to careers across film, television, and digital media. It’s an exciting step for both our students and our teaching team, who are deeply invested in nurturing the next generation of creative talent.”
