Julian Everett
CIT Teacher, Fitness
"I have worked in the fitness industry for more than 20 years and have held a range of roles including a facility manager and coordinator, circuit instructor, triathlon coach and exercise therapist for a range of physiotherapists.
I am the owner and director of Body Basics Fitness Studio in Curtin, which I set up 12 years ago and continue to run. Running a business parallel to teaching ensures the skills I teach to my students are the skills they will need to apply in the workplace.
As a business owner, I know that graduates need practical experience under their belt to succeed in the workplace. You will get that from CIT and be ready to work. I have been a Board member for Fitness ACT and an ACT Board member for the Registration of Exercise Professionals Council.
Through these roles I stay in touch with industry trends, registration policy developments and professional development requirements.
In 2009, we opened our full service facility, CIT Fit&Well. It is open to the public and run by students. Students are responsible for everything from conducting one-on-one fitness assessments, taking group exercise classes, client interaction and running the reception area.
Most of our students aspire to be personal trainers and this approach gives them a full suite of skills, because even the best personal trainer in the world needs to know how to field enquiries, make bookings, keep accurate business records and manage money.
As I said, you will be ready for work when you graduate from CIT."
