Induction and Orientation of Staff Policy

1. Purpose

To ensure new employees at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) are inducted through a structured process that provides an overview of the ACT Public Sector (ACTPS), CIT, and—where applicable—the Educator role, and supports their effective orientation into their work area.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all new CIT employees and their managers including casual employees.

3. Principles

CIT induction and orientation approach

3.1 Managers are vital in the induction and orientation of a new CIT employee and must be involved, even if responsibility for the induction of new staff has been delegated to another team member (a buddy).

3.2 The manager must ensure the new CIT employee undertakes all aspects of the induction and orientation process to effectively transition into their new role.

3.3 When inducting and orienting a new CIT employee there are three key aspects:

  • 3.3.1 Educator specific Induction.
  • 3.3.2 Corporate Induction.
  • 3.3.3 Local area induction.
Educator specific induction

3.4 All new Educators in CIT are required to undertake the specialised Educator induction learning to build their knowledge about working as an Educator in a VET sector; their roles and responsibilities as an Educator in CIT; and any additional specific knowledge requirements.

3.5 Managers are required to pay casual employees to complete the Educator induction learning.

3.6 The Teacher Capability Team within CIT are the business owners of the Educator specific induction and are responsible to implementing this learning.

CIT Corporate induction

3.7 All new CIT employees are required to undertake and complete the mandatory CIT Corporate Induction Online Program with 8 weeks of commencement to assist them to transition into the workplace.

  • 3.7.1 The focus of the CIT Corporate Induction Online Program provides new employees with an understanding of:
    • 3.7.1 (a) their obligations as ACT Public Servants
    • 3.7.1 (b) the VET Sector and Registered Training Organisation (RTO) standards.
    • 3.7.1 (c) CIT operations and responsibilities as a CIT employee;
    • 3.7.1 (d) relevant ACTPS and CIT corporate policies, procedures and guidelines;
    • 3.7.1 (e) expected workplace behaviours;
    • 3.7.1 (f) access to corporate services and employment conditions;
    • 3.7.1 (g) Workplace Health and Safety responsibilities.

3.8 Managers are required to pay casual employees to complete the CIT Corporate Induction Online Program.

3.9 The People and Culture Branch are the business owners of the CIT Corporate Induction Online Program and are responsible for its implementation.

Local area induction

3.10 Line managers or supervisors are responsible for supporting new employees to transition effectively into the workplace by ensuring they;

  • 3.10.1 understand the work environment;
  • 3.10.2 receive clear direction on their role, responsibilities, work hours and expectations;
  • 3.10.3 are provided with access to, and guidance on, ICT equipment, systems/software, CIT email and access cards;
  • 3.10.4 understand reporting obligations;
  • 3.10.5 receive any addition support they require to perform their role effectively.

3.11 The new CIT employee’s line manager or supervisor is responsible for arranging any role specific learning and development required for the new employee to perform their role effectively.
