Overview

This advanced, practical welding program provides hands-on, industry-focused training designed to build the practical skill for high quality, code compliant welding.

This course is undertaken in conjunction with WELD Australia’s theory assessments to gain certification in AS1796 Certificates 1-9, noting that the training period of 15 sessions covers one of the certificate advanced techniques. Participants will refine their technique across selected welding processes, learn to interpret drawings and specifications, and apply safe work practices to produce consistent, structurally sound welds.

The course combines targeted theory and assessment via the WELD Australia website with CIT workshop-based practice and assessment to ensure welders can perform to industry expectations and work confidently toward industry recognised AS 1796 standards and achieve certificates 1-9.

This includes:

  • Welding safety, cutting/gouging, welding terms and symbols.
  • Basic metallurgy, heat treatment and control of welds.
  • Interpretation of technical drawings for welding.
  • Welding equipment, processes, welding practice, inspection & testing.
  • For the supervisor/inspector levels: knowledge of relevant standards (e.g., AS 1554 for structural steel, AS 1210 for pressure vessels) and how to implement them.

This course is suited to Individuals aiming to take on more complex welding tasks—such as pressure piping, pressure vessels, structural steel, or coded welding—benefit from the formal recognition the certification provides.

AS 1796 Welding Certifications

Students may undertake training and assessment towards a range of Weld Australia AS 1796 certifications, including Tickets 1, 1E, 3, 3E, 4, 5, 7, 8G and 8F. These certifications support employment in structural steel, pressure piping, pressure vessels, manufacturing and other industries where high-integrity welding is required. 1 ticket per semester.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be aged 17 years or older.

Weld Australia Registration Requirement Students enrolling in the Certified Welding (AS 1796) course are required to first register with Weld Australia via the WeldQ system. As part of the registration process, students will be required to upload evidence of relevant qualifications, welding experience, and any supporting documentation requested by Weld Australia. WeldQ is used to manage welder qualifications, assessments, and certification records.

Use

We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework levels of at least 2 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course. If you do not have this level, you can still enrol and seek support to improve your skills or you may prefer to begin with a lower level course, or enrol in the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) to develop your literacy skills.       Description: This course is ideal for experienced welders, fabricators, and tradespeople who are looking to validate or advance their welding skills to industry-recognised standards. It is particularly suited to individuals working in sectors where high-integrity welds are required, such as pressure equipment, structural steel, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and heavy fabrication. It also suits apprentices or early-career welders who have a solid foundation in welding processes and want to progress toward AS 1796 certification or higher-level competency for employment or promotion. CIT delivers and assesses the practical components which presented in conjunction with Weld Australia theory assessments can contribute to WA certification 1 – 9. Certification is administered by WA. Note: participants must have applied to WELD Australia WeldQ first to determine eligibility and complete the theory components before undertaking the practical assessments 1-9 at CIT.
