This hands-on beginner short course will introduce you to the practical skills and knowledge needed for basic clothing alterations and repairs. Whether you're looking to extend the life of your wardrobe or explore sewing, you’ll build confidence working with garments in a supportive, practical environment.

Through guided, step-by-step instruction, you’ll learn how to safely use sewing machines and apply core techniques for altering and repairing clothing by hand and on industrial equipment. You’ll also gain exposure to modern tools and innovations in the fashion industry within the CIT Woden fashion studios. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to confidently repair and alter your own garments using skills transferable to home use.

Eligibility and entry requirements

To enrol in this course, you must be aged 15 years or older, and be one of the following:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • a New Zealand citizen
  • the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
  • an eligible temporary visa holder as defined in the CIT Admission and Enrolment Policy.
