Assessment
Assessment is how you demonstrate that you have achieved the learning outcomes for a subject or competency. Depending on your course, assessment tasks may include practical activities, reports, tests, online assignments, exercises, group work, presentations, discussions, observations, or practical demonstrations.
By the end of the second week of classes, your educators will provide a Subject Guide that explains:
- the purpose of the subject
- the learning outcomes you are expected to achieve
- the assessment tasks you need to complete
- the expected length of written assessments or duration of presentations
- formatting and submission requirements
- how your work will be assessed and graded
- when marked assessments will be returned and how feedback will be provided
- what support is available if you are having difficulty meeting assessment requirements
- reassessment, resubmission and resit opportunities
- how to request a review of, or appeal, an assessment result
- information about skills recognition and credit transfer where applicable
Important: If you wish to appeal a result, your appeal must be submitted within four weeks of the result being made available in CIT's Student Administration System (Banner).
Some subjects are assessed on a competency basis and are not graded. In these subjects, students who successfully meet all requirements will receive an Ungraded Pass (UP).
For graded subjects, results may be awarded as:
- Pass (P)
- Credit (CR)
- Distinction (D)
- High Distinction (HD)
Some assessment tasks may have specific conditions, including restrictions on the use of notes, textbooks, calculators, mobile phones, or other electronic devices.
Students enrolled in ACT Year 12 Certificate courses are assessed in accordance with the requirements of the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies (BSSS). Further information is available at bsss.act.edu.au. Your Subject Guide and teachers will also explain the assessment requirements that apply to your course.
Key message: Make sure you read your Subject Guide carefully, keep track of assessment due dates, and speak with your educators as early as possible if you are experiencing difficulties that may affect your ability to complete assessments.
