Overview
This qualification describes the skills and knowledge for trade level roles carried out under general direction within sports turf management.
Individuals with this qualification perform tasks autonomously involving a broad range of skills that are applied in a wide variety of sports turf facilities and workplaces. They exercise discretion and judgement in planning tasks, selecting and operating equipment, coordinating resources and applying contingency measures during work.
Legislation related to the installation of irrigation and the storage, handling and application of chemicals applies in some states and territories.

Apprentice:
Apprentices attend Bruce Campus one day per week (approx. 8 hours) for 2 semesters for their first year.
Year 2 and 3 Apprentices attendance changes to allow students to work in industry’s peek growing season.
Apprentices:
- Term 1 and 4 of each year Apprentices work up to 5 days in industry
- Term 2 and 3 of each year Apprentices attend CIT 2 days a week and work up to 3 days in Industry.
ASBA:
ABASs attend Bruce Campus half a day per week (approx. 4 hours) for 4 semesters for their first and second year and will be in the workplace for 1 and a half days a week.
ASBAs will transition into full-time employment as an apprentice at the commencement of year 3
Year 3 – ASBAs transfer to a full-time Apprentice:
- Term 1 and 4 of year 2 ASBAs work 2 days in industry.
- Term 2 and 3 of year 2 ASBAs attend CIT 2 days a week.
Year 4
- Term 1 and 4 of year 3 Apprentices work up to 5 days in industry.
- Term 2 and 3 of year 3 Apprentices attend CIT 2 days a week and work up to 3 days in Industry.

Additional Information
To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in:
- 23 units of competency:
- 18 core units plus
- 5 elective units.
Students are required to have access to a digital device (tablet/Laptop or similar) to bring to all classes.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible to enter this qualification you must have a Year 10 Certificate or equivalent and be working in the turf industry.
Students entering this course must be employed in the industry and registered with an Australian Apprenticeships Provider.
It is recommended that students entering this qualification must be in generally good health and able to participate in the physical activities required by the qualification and the industry.
Physical activities may include:
- Manual handling tasks for sustained periods (no more than 20kgs)
- Bending and kneeling
- Lifting heavy items
- Carrying
- Pulling
- Pushing
- Walking distances
The following entry requirements apply if you are entering this program as an Apprentice/ASBA you must:
- Be enrolled in an ACT school (ASBAs Only)
- Be employed in the Sports Turf industry (a part-time basis for ASBAs)
- Be an apprentice under the Australian Apprenticeship Scheme (AAS) and be registered with an Apprentice Network Provider (ANP) prior to enrolment.
If you already have skills in this area, you may seek recognition for all or part of this program.

To study any course at CIT (excluding non-accredited training) you must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).
Literacy Skills Information
We suggest that you will need Australian Core Skills Framework literacy levels of at least 3 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication and, depending on your course of study, numeracy skills to successfully complete this course.
