Apprenticeship Partner Profile - Vince Ball
Executive Director
ACT Regional Building and Construction Industry Training Council
Vince Ball has been advocating the importance of apprenticeships for almost forty years; in 1970 he was appointed as the "Apprentice Master" for the Department of Housing and Construction and has been actively involved with apprentices and trainees across all areas of the construction industry since then.
This dedication has seen Vince nominated for the Commitment to Australian Apprenticeships award, an Australian-wide award presented by the Australian Government Minister for Education, The Hon Julia Gillard MP, to those displaying excellence in the planning, delivery, flexibility and success of apprenticeship training.
Vince himself found his start as a humble apprentice at CIT (then called the Canberra Technical College) in the 1960's, after which he went on to achieve great things in the areas of trade training through his collaboration with the Institute.
He played an instrumental role in the concepts, partnerships and brokering of the CIT Training Fund Authority Schools trade taster programs, and assisted CIT to develop the Certificate I in Civil program currently being delivered to Year 10 school students.
Vince was also instrumental in leading the way on Numeracy and Literacy assistance and support for trades training in the ACT and regional NSW, and continues to collaborate with industry and training bodies such as CIT:
"This year we are initiating a number of taster programs to our high schools in the ACT for years 7-10, in conjunction with the Housing Industry Association and CIT. These programs have never been attempted at those levels, nationally, so it’s certainly innovative, and it’s certainly looking at a way of addressing skills shortages over the long term."
He acts tirelessly and selflessly in many committees and reference groups for the Institute and is a true friend of CIT and the Building and Construction Industry of the ACT.
CIT congratulates Vince on his worthy nomination for the Commitment to Australian Apprenticeships award as part of the 2008 Minister's Awards for Excellence.
