CIT Staffer Recognised as a Master Artist (Again)!
2012 has started with a magnificent surprise for a CIT staff member.
Janet Fieldhouse, CIT's Cultural Arts Teacher and Coordinator in the Yurauna Centre, was last night announced the winner of the $20,000 main prize in the 2011 Indigenous Ceramic Art Awards.
Janet, a Canberra-based Torres Strait artist, was selected for her work called "Tattoo", an installation that uses a light box and transparent porcelain to look at ritual scarification practices in the Torres Strait Islands.
The award is run by the Shepparton Art Museum in Victoria which also holds a significant collection of ceramic work.
This is not the first time Janet has won the award; she preciously won the same award three years ago (then valued at $15,000). Janet is also the only local artist to be represented in the National Gallery of Australia’s indigenous ceramic artwork collection.
Janet said she was honoured to be recognised for her work.
"It feels overwhelming to win again," she said
"I really enjoy just entering the competition, being a part of it is reward enough for me."
