Murray Donkin
When Murray Donkin came to Canberra he decided to make a career change from Supermarket Manager to professional Chef as he always had a passion for cooking. He started the Certificate II in Commercial Cookery at CIT to explore the possibilities of becoming a Chef and what it meant to him and his family of being an apprentice in his late 30’s.
"I really enjoyed the whole study atmosphere i.e. the kitchen, the hands on and fundamental skills in cooking gained from doing this course" said Murray.
Murray is also visually impaired but his disability has not stopped him in achieving his goal to become a professional Chef. He also complimented his teachers from the Culinary Program, "they were all very helpful and interested to look outside the box and explore other avenues to teach me e.g. through sense, smell, touch, taste, sound and intuition. They were very interested and fascinated to see how I would learn, adapt and function in a kitchen".
Murray recently graduated from the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. As part of the Certificate III course he completed his apprenticeship at the leading Ottermann restaurant in Barton. He is now employed as Head Chef at the Goodwin Aged Care Village in Ainslie.
