Fiona Judge

Fiona Judge is already a graphic designer. However, her life changed when her son was born and as a single mum, she had to cope with his Aspergers with no support. Her need to be there to support her son meant her own career went on hold, but she continued to pursue her creative muse.

"I have my business, 'Design that works', doing graphic design part time. I originally studied at CIT in graphic design and worked in agencies but once my son was born, it was difficult to hold down a regular job" she says. A friend introduced her to web design and to ward off feeling isolated and trapped, Fiona has once again come to CIT to study. "I'm picking up programs that I hadn't learnt the first time. I'm absolutely having a ball but it is a lot of work!"

One project close to Fiona's heart is her submission for the Next exhibition, a combined graphic design and digital media student mid year show. Having had to research future and cutting edge technology, students then need to come up with a product and marketing collateral, including posters and flyers.

Fiona's concept is that of a nano robot that, once injected into a young girl, will lie dormant until pregnancy and 'fix' any abnormalities in the foetus. It is a controversial concept, but one she has intimate experience in dealing with. "To cut the cost to the community, both financially and in terms of carers, would be a great benefit."

Long term, Fiona is considering a degree in Multi Media at UC and then a Diploma in Education, which will give her more options to work and support her son. "I'm enjoying this course a lot more than the first one. I can push myself. Clients are very conservative, so at CIT I feel I can really push myself in a creative way."
