Denise Dixon

Denise enrolled in the CIT Yurauna Centre Learning Options for Indigenous Australians program in 2004.  "At the time I was so nervous returning to study after 31 years but right from the first day I knew I was in the right place.  I soon became part of the Yurauna family" says Denise.  Another reason why Denise enrolled in the program was to improve her literacy and numerical skills and an opportunity to research other study options.

Denise has recently graduated from the Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs Work.  She also graduated from Certificate IV in Youth Work in 2007 and Certificate II in Learning Options for Indigenous Australians in 2005.  Denise is currently studying towards an Advanced Diploma of Youth Work.  Denise was was also named 2008 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year in the ACT Training Excellence Awards.

"Since gaining my qualifications, I am now a Youth Worker within the transitions program at Barnardos.  The programs at CIT have prepared and given me the skills to work in this industry.  My training has been essential in me being the best worker I can be." Denise Dixon

With a wealth of life experiences and overcoming many great challenges in life is what made Denise where she is today.  "I can say to many of the clients I work with I understand, I know, I have been there too! If I can survive and go onto train and work they can too!" says Denise.

As a performer in the arts, Denise stated that she is not afraid of public speaking.  She said: "I have come a long way from the woman that first started at the Yurauna Centre and I am now able to speak up on issues pertaining to family, Aboriginal Australians and the positive effects of education."  Denise believes that education is the key that can unlock the door to a whole new life.
