CIT Introduces World First Biometrics MOOC

Published: 03 Sep 2015

Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has unveiled a world first in education and training, with the launch of a massive open online course (MOOC) in biometric technologies, an area of growing interest and applicability internationally.

The introduction to biometric technologies MOOC, now available to study for free anywhere in the world, will provide greater exposure to a technology that will impact on secure identification for everybody into the future.

"We are seeing biometric technologies - or the science of detecting and recognising human characteristics by measuring and analysing biological data, such as fingerprint scanning, retinal scanning, facial recognition, and voice analysis - increasingly embedded in organisations and security processes around the world," says lead developer and CIT biometrics teacher Rachael Paton.

"There is growing curiosity about how these technologies work, and the legal  and privacy aspects of the technologies," Ms Paton says.

The course has been developed following consultation with members of the biometrics industry, who have indicated they would like to see an introductory course added to the available in-depth technical course offerings to cater to an emerging public need.

The course is suitable for anybody who is interested in learning the basic concepts of how unique biological traits and biometric technologies can be used to deter fraud attempts and reduce security threats for better protection of personal identity. It can be completed in four weeks of three to four hours of study each week.

Completion of the introductory course provides a pathway into CIT's Certificate IV in Biometric Technologies.
