English Study for international students and other non-permanent residents.
Full-time Study
These courses offered allow students to study English from an elementary level through to an advanced level that prepares them for further study.
Students are placed into the courses according to their level of English. This is based on the results of a short entry assessment test or on an IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) score.
Courses Available
The English Language Centre offers the following courses in English:
- Statement of Attainment in Elementary English
- Certificate I in English Language Skills
- Certificate II in English Language Skills
- Certificate III in English Language Skills
- Certificate IV in English Language Skills
- Certificate IV in Academic English
Each certificate is made up of 3 subjects:
- Spoken English - focuses on speaking and listening skills
- Written English - focuses on reading and writing skills
- English in Australia - focuses on using English in practical situations.
Study Options
Part-time Evening Classes: Reid Campus, in J Block.
Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5.45pm to 8.15pm. Three levels are available. Students will be assessed to determine which is the best level for them. Classes include:
- speaking
- listening
- reading
- writing and cross-cultural communication
Full-time and Part-time Day Classes: English Language Skills Program at Reid Campus in H Block
The following options are available:
- Spoken English - develop listening and speaking skills
- Written English - develop reading and writing skills
- English in Australia - develop all aspects of English Language and use English in practical situations
including guest speakers, excursions and themed learning activities - Written & Spoken Intensive - develop listening, speaking reading and writing skills
- Spoken English & English in Australia
Each subject is offered at different English levels. Students will be assessed when they start classes and placed in the appropriate level for their needs.

IELTS Entry Requirements
- To begin Certificate I in English Language Skills: you need an IELTS of 4.0 .
- To begin Certificate II in English Language Skills: you need an IELTS of 4.5 .
- To begin Certificate III in English Language Skills: you need an IELTS of 5.0 .
- To begin Certificate IV in English Language Skills: you need an IELTS of 5.5 .
For full-time students each certificate normally requires 25 hours per week attendance for 10 weeks (250 hours). Note: IELTS is not necessary to join a level/class.
